Hungering Rift

The Hungering Rift is a grotesque interdimensional horror that should not exist. It is not merely a creature but an event—a rift through which otherworldly nightmares seep into our reality. Its form resembles an ever-gaping void, an impossible abyss lined with shifting rows of eyes and teeth that devour all reason and logic surrounding it. Some believe it is not a being but rather a fracture in existence—an insatiable wound in the universe.

The Hungering Rift does not speak, reason, or bargain; it only consumes. Those who stand in its presence hear the whispers of countless voices—some scream, some weep, and some laugh in madness.

To gaze into its depths is to see everything and nothing, to feel oneself drawn toward an inevitable oblivion. Even those who manage to escape often carry a piece of it with them, their minds forever touched by its alien hunger.a

The Rift's presence weakens the very essence of reality. Any creature that begins its turn or enters within 3 spaces of the Rift must succeed on an Endure check against the Rift's Manifest die or take Escalation damage.

Devour Thought: 2nd - Action - Influence - 6 Spaces

The Rift's numerous shifting eyes focus on an enemy, drawing their mind into the abyss. The Rift selects a target within range. They must succeed on a contested Glean check or lose an action on their next turn.

Eldritch Pull: 3rd - Action - Manifest - 6 Spaces

The Rift's hunger distorts the surrounding world, pulling victims in closer. The Rift selects a Foe within range. They must succeed on a Navigate check against the Rift’s Manifest die or be drawn to the nearest unoccupied space next to the Rift.

Unfathomable Terror: 4th - Action - Influence - 12 Spaces

The Rift reveals a fraction of what lies beyond. All creatures within range must succeed on a contested Glean check, or their speed is reduced to 0, and they cannot teleport until the end of their next turn.

Consuming Abyss: 5th - Action - Attack - Melee

The Rift expands, attempting to erase a creature from existence. Choose an opponent within range. They must succeed on an Endure check against the Rift's maximum Manifest die or begin to be consumed. A creature being consumed in this way takes Escalation Damage at the start of their turn and must then make an additional Endure check against the damage they just received. If they fail this check, they fall into mortal peril.
